6 Tips for Taken the Perfect Headshot
We live in an environment that thrives on the visual presentation of the individual. Social media platforms such as Instagram, Tik Tok, Facebook and dating apps encourage their users and subscribers to look their best to gain the attention they are seeking. Being outrageous is a way to draw attention to your platform, but the serious consumer will elevate their profile with a professional headshot. There are things you can do as the client to ensure your headshots are exactly what you imagined them to be. Below I put together six tips that will help you take the perfect headshot.
1. Connect with your Photographer!
This is the very first step if you’re going to have a successful headshot session. Establishing a rapport will ease the tension you may be feeling about having your picture taken. Let’s face it, not all of us are Vouge and GQ models that are accustomed to having our pictures taken. I have noticed some of my clients will immediately tense up when I point the camera at them. Adding to the tension is the added stress of the multiple lights, backdrops, reflectors, and the psychological pressure you put on yourself believing you don’t take good pictures. When you connect with the photographer, the awkwardness of having to engage with a stranger taking your picture is removed and you will be able to relax. Having a good rapport is the key to capturing the perfect headshot.
2. Know Your Best side.
Everyone has a best side because the human frame isn’t symmetrical. While visiting with my granddaughter in Las Vegas, (Who happens to be eleven) she mentioned to me that we all have two faces. She proceeded to cover half of her face with her hand and then she covered the other half. There was a noticeable difference from one side of her face to the other. This difference wasn’t enormous, but there were some subtle variations. This is why knowing your best side is important. If the photographer is photographing you from what you consider to be your bad side, regardless of how technically sound the image may be from a photographic point of view, you will not be satisfied with the results. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, if the left eye is smaller than the right eye, the photographer may place the left eye closest to the lens. The reason for this is that in photography things that are closest to the camera lens will appear larger. When you are posed in this manner, in the final image both eyes will appear to be symmetrical.
3. Relax.
Relax, relax, relax and be yourself because everyone else is taken! I know this is easier said than done. But it’s important to relax and chill during your photo session. To get the most authentic image of you, try to release the stress before your session. Getting a good night of rest is equally important. You don’t want to show up after a stressful night of sleep. If possible, show up at the location at least thirty minutes early and decompress from the drive. Listen to your favorite jam. Drink some water and chill. It’s really the little things that make all the difference of how you look, feel, and present before the camera.
4. Less is Better.
When it comes to headshots, you’re the focus of the image, not your wardrobe. Avoid wearing clothing that have busy patterns and shapes, because they have the tendency to be distracting. If possible, do not wear items that have logos on them, unless it’s your company’s brand. Solid and neutral colors work best. Most companies prefer a white or black backdrop, but gray is also a popular choice. This one is obvious, but I will mention it. Older and worn-out clothing with faded colors is a no no! And avoid overly casual outfits. Accessories should be at a minimum as well, remember the focus of a headshot is your face. When accessorizing, keep it simple. Small stud earrings are better than long draping ones. And lastly, look in the mirror and check your hair, your makeup, and your teeth to see if any residue from lunch wants to photobomb your photoshoot.
5. Enjoy Yourself.
Photoshoots are fun because you get to channel your inner celebrity and be the center of attraction. It’s all about you so enjoy yourself and allow the photographer to capture an amazing image of you. This is the time when you get to shine and show the world how amazing you are. You’ve worked hard to get where you are, and this headshot is your brand. Own the moment and enjoy yourself.
6. Be Confident
It doesn’t matter how technically sound, or how expense the photographer’s camera may be, if you lack confidence in yourself the camera will see it and magnify it. Being confident throughout your session will go a long way in the end. Let’s face it, the reason you’ve booked a headshot session with a professional photographer is because you want professional results. The first thing you can do to ensure you take the perfect headshot is to be confident, because a little confidence goes a long way. Believe in yourself and your brand. This is not the time to be timid, it’s your time to shine!
